Ft Armistead was used for coastal defense in the War of 1812, abandoned in 1923 and claimed by the City of Baltimore in 1928. It was used as a Navy ammunition dump during World War II and returned to the City in 1947. A tunnel that connected Ft Armistead to Ft Carroll, a military island on the Patapsco was blocked sometime in the 80's. The place is now covered in graffiti and inhabited by cats and rats.
